Flooring Trends in 2018

install wood floor

Homeowners are more experimental with their flooring today compared to years ago. Technology has also made it easier for manufacturers to create different flooring designs. You might be thinking of remodeling your home or building a new home.

Below are some flooring recommendations from the professionals at Chem-Dry of Bloomington. Find more flooring tips and trends at their Facebook page.

Gray wood flooring

Having grey wood floors is catching on in 2018. Majority of the people who opt for this type of flooring are those with modern houses because it fits perfectly with them. Grey wood flooring is just what you need to brighten your home and give it that unique, clean look. However, it does not have the warmth that comes with the typical natural-color wood flooring. It is advisable to get flooring samples from the shop so you can try them in the natural light and see how they will fit in your home.

Fumed wood flooring

Fumed wood flooring is different from the other types of wood flooring because it does not need staining to achieve the final finish of one’s choice. The flooring already has its rich color and grain, and that is why it does not need staining. What happens is that the wood undergoes the fuming process.

Fuming is whereby the wood is exposed to airborne ammonia in the chamber where it is placed. When the wood gets in contact with ammonia, it changes its color. The changes that took place as a result of the combination of wood and ammonia is never the same always. Various factors determine the outcome, and these include the outdoor surrounding, type of wood, and the atmosphere found in the chamber. This type of flooring has a stronger color and grain.

Parquet hardwood flooring

One of the flooring trends in 2018 is parquet hardwood flooring. This flooring consists of solid wood pieces that are made to form unique patterns. The wood pieces can be used to create geometric designs. Parquet hardwood is a great way of making people focus on the rich natural wood, and that is why homeowners love it.

Bleached and blanched woods

Majority of wooden floors have glossy brown stains. While some people like that, there are others who don’t. That is why designers and manufacturers came up with bleached and blanched woods to cater to those who don’t like the glossy brown stains. Therefore, homeowners can have floors that appear softer and look like they have been white-washed.

Blanching is used to achieve this look. Blanching is a process that involves bleaching wood to give it the desired result. A chemical solution is used to bleach the wood. After the final bleaching, you can still see the natural wood grain underneath the whitewashed look.

Bamboo floors

Bamboo floors are a big part of 2018 flooring trends. Bamboo floors are of high quality, and they help to bring in that fresh woody look that many homeowners desire. These qualities are the reasons why many more homes will have bamboo floors by the end of 2018.

Have You Heard of Carpet Tiles?

carpet tiles

The two most popular choices for flooring in a home in 2017 are hardwood and wall-to-wall carpet. Laminate flooring has risen in popularity in recent years, however, the previous two types of flooring still remain the most common in homes.

In terms of installation, in the past, you could either install hardwood floor, refinish hardwood floor or install wall-to-wall carpet. However, in 2017, there is a new choice. Instead of wall-to-wall carpet, you can choose carpet tiles.

Have you heard of carpet tiles? They’re an amazing new choice of flooring for modern homes and we highly recommend them.

Here is why carpet tiles are a great choice for your floor. First, anyone can install them on their own. We never recommend DIY installation of wall-to-wall carpet as it is crucial that it be done correct in order to ensure the carpet performs up to expectations over the course of its lifetime. Errors in installing wall-to-wall carpet can lead to several significant aesthetic and performance problems.

But carpet tiles? That’s totally different. Each tile comes in its own square size and features interlocking fasteners along the edges of the tile. Then each tile fits into place with another across the square footage of a room in your home. For all intents and purposes, a carpet tile is similar to a LEGO block for children.

You will save a lot of money if you don’t have to pay a carpet installer. You will also save money if any type of damage occurs to a single carpet tile. In the event a major stain or soiling occurs on wall-to-wall carpet, you need to replace the entire carpet in order to rid your home of the problem area, but for carpet tiles, you just need to replace the single tile.

We find this feature to be the single best benefit of carpet tiles and an excellent choice for homes with pets or children where stains might be more common.

You will also find that carpet tiles are very easy to maintain too. For the most part, the tiles are made of durable synthetic carpet fibers able to withstand wear and tear. To care for them, you simply need to vacuum on a regular basis and be sure to schedule professional carpet cleaning from a local service every 6-12 months. This is still an important step even for carpet tiles. You can learn more from on why it is so important to deep clean carpet and carpet tiles.

The last benefit is the cost of carpet tiles. We already mentioned the money you can save on installation and the potential to replace a single tile instead of an entire room of carpet but the other cost benefit is that each individual tile is very cheap and much cheaper than hardwood floor.

We hope this post introduced you to a new choice for home flooring in carpet tiles and truly feel this new type of flooring can be useful and beneficial in most homes or businesses, either in traffic areas or somewhere like a basement.

Refinish Hardwood Floors

hardwood floor

Hardwood floors are back in style and increase the elegance and classy factor of your home. But since it is prone to scratches, it loses its shine and hence the need to refinish these floors arises.

Hardwood is not a floor which should be covered with vinyl or carpet and thus if you are not interested in investing your fortune in getting it refinished then here are some DIY tips to refinish it!

There are two ways of refinishing the hardwood floors.

Method #1: Recoating

Recoating can take up lot of time but is effective enough as it doesn’t involve sanding down to bare wood. Recoating works on solid and laminated wood but before you plan to recoat, you need to clean the entire wood with wood cleaner and test two corner patches which can be covered with furniture later on!

Coat it with polyurethane and after 24 hours when it is dried off completely, you should try scraping it with a coin gently.  If it doesn’t pull off then you may continue recoating of the entire floor but if it is scraping off or is giving your floor a crackled texture then it means that adhesives are not going to work on your floor and you have to sand it down to bare wood as per method #2.

You may then recoat the entire floor if the test is successful and use darker stain where you see scratches or ridges.

Method #2: Sanding

Step #1:

The first step before refinishing of the floor begins is to sand off the old finish so as to even out the floor. You can do it using sand paper of coarse, medium or fine base.

All you have to keep in mind is to wear a dust mask for protection of your eyes, ears and nose. Depending upon the type of wood, sanding process may take time but is worth the effort!

Hence, just continue the sanding of your existing floor and don’t worry if it gets ripped off from somewhere as anyways it is not going to be used again.

Step #2:

After sanding is done, you need to clean the entire floor to remove all the dust particles to smoothen the surface. Be as thorough as you can because dust can cause rough spots.

Step #3:

Apply sealant using a bristle brush on a clean floor and allow it to dry for a day until you apply a second coat using the same procedure.

Additional Tips ...

The room where you are refinishing the floor needs good ventilation because both sanding and application of new floor generates lot of dust. Hence you should close the doors if the dust is going to affect the other rooms of your house but you should open all the vents and windows.

Also, if you are unsure as to whether use oil or water based sealant then you may check with some professional. But if it oil based then you might have to use respirator to while applying it!

Steps to Install a Garage Door

garage door

A garage door weathers all storms, rains and scorching sunlight to keep our cars and other items safe and secure outside our house. Be sure to be aware if you need a new garage door.

The garage door needs to be sturdy, heavy and well built.

In addition to its sturdiness, it has to be very safe in order to avoid any home accident. One needs to check on the deteriorating quality of the old garage door and make sure you install a new one that is completely safe.

Many garage door companies send their technicians to install it for you but if you want to do it yourself, there are a couple of instructions one must follow to install the door correctly.

If you are installing a door for the first time or trying to remove an old one first, in both the cases, you might need some help. It takes about 8 to 12 hours to do the task with a torsion spring and tensioning.

Follow the below mentioned tips if you want to install your garage door yourself:

  • After you have finished attaching the weather-stripping at the bottom of the garage door panel, you need to set it in the doorway by putting some nails partway into the jams in order to wedge the door in its place. Next attach the hinges at the top edge of the door.
  • Assemble the curved, horizontal and vertical pieces of the tracks as shown in the instruction card. Follow it up with rollers and brackets that have to be installed on the door section or wall-mounted brackets. Next, slip the vertical tracks onto the rollers of the door and repeat with the other door section.
  • Next, install the rollers on the other side of the door and slip it on the vertical tracks too. After this step, you need to fasten the first section hinges to the second one. You will need a power drill with a nut driver or a screwdriver tip to help you with your task.
  • Repeat the above mentioned steps with the third section. Keep checking the level of the door and the vertical track. Next, you need to fasten the vertical track’s top plates on to the wall. The lag screws should have ample space in the framing members as the door will put in considerable force while going up and down.
  • Attach jamb brackets to tracks and fasten the brackets to the framing members. Next, install the horizontal and curved tracks, positioning them as shown in the instructions. Bolt them together. After mounting the track on the hangers, cut the rear track hanger to the desired length to support the track.
  • Screw the hanger to the solid framing of the ceiling joist and loosely mount the track. Repeat with the other track. After fitting the last door section, you can remove any temporary screws. You need to roll up the door for 4 feet to check whether the tracks the aligned properly. Make any adjustments if required and lastly tighten all the fasteners.

You can follow the instructions guide to install the garage door and save hundreds of dollars.
