Hardwood floors are back in style and increase the elegance and classy factor of your home. But since it is prone to scratches, it loses its shine and hence the need to refinish these floors arises.
Hardwood is not a floor which should be covered with vinyl or carpet and thus if you are not interested in investing your fortune in getting it refinished then here are some DIY tips to refinish it!
There are two ways of refinishing the hardwood floors.
Method #1: Recoating
Recoating can take up lot of time but is effective enough as it doesn’t involve sanding down to bare wood. Recoating works on solid and laminated wood but before you plan to recoat, you need to clean the entire wood with wood cleaner and test two corner patches which can be covered with furniture later on!
Coat it with polyurethane and after 24 hours when it is dried off completely, you should try scraping it with a coin gently. If it doesn’t pull off then you may continue recoating of the entire floor but if it is scraping off or is giving your floor a crackled texture then it means that adhesives are not going to work on your floor and you have to sand it down to bare wood as per method #2.
You may then recoat the entire floor if the test is successful and use darker stain where you see scratches or ridges.
Method #2: Sanding
The first step before refinishing of the floor begins is to sand off the old finish so as to even out the floor. You can do it using sand paper of coarse, medium or fine base.
All you have to keep in mind is to wear a dust mask for protection of your eyes, ears and nose. Depending upon the type of wood, sanding process may take time but is worth the effort!
Hence, just continue the sanding of your existing floor and don’t worry if it gets ripped off from somewhere as anyways it is not going to be used again.
After sanding is done, you need to clean the entire floor to remove all the dust particles to smoothen the surface. Be as thorough as you can because dust can cause rough spots.
Apply sealant using a bristle brush on a clean floor and allow it to dry for a day until you apply a second coat using the same procedure.
Additional Tips ...
The room where you are refinishing the floor needs good ventilation because both sanding and application of new floor generates lot of dust. Hence you should close the doors if the dust is going to affect the other rooms of your house but you should open all the vents and windows.
Also, if you are unsure as to whether use oil or water based sealant then you may check with some professional. But if it oil based then you might have to use respirator to while applying it!
